The Department of Humanities was established at the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies
in 1996. The courses provided by the Department are designed in order to develop the
humanitarian and social aspect of the engineering profession. According to the dangerous
aspects of modern society (contradiction of technical development and endangered ecology),
the technical intelligence faces the problems which are possible to cope with only on the
basis of technical education. In order to make competent decisions, the basis of
humanities is required. We follow from the fact that within the modern trends in the
society development the creative searching for the solution of the problems of modern
civilization has to be connected with the cultivation of thinking as well as the
personality of a future engineer.
Teaching
Activities
A unitary system of disciplines has been
created at the Department. In the curricula one can find the following disciplines:
- Selected Topics in Philosophy
- Sociology
- Industrial Psychology
- Techniques of Psychical Work and Rhetoric
- Selected Topics in Ethics
- Religious Studies
- Politology
- Psychology and Sociology of Labour
- Environmental Philosophy
- Managerial Ethics
English, German and Russian languages are also taught at the Department.
The subject Selected Topics in Philosophy is a compulsory subject and it is taught in the
1st year of study. The other disciplines are optional. All the disciplines are finished by
classified assignment.
Foreign languages are taught in the 2nd and the 3rd year of study as a compulsory
discipline. Students attend language courses either for 2 semesters (advanced level) or
for 4 semesters (intermediate level). The subject is finished by a classified assignment.
Attention is also paid to the preparation of doctoral candidates for their language
examination.
Research
The members of the Department
participate in the institutional task "Efficiency Improvement and Modernization in
Teaching Foreign Languages and Humanities at the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies of
the Technical University in Prešov."
The main aim of the research task is to achieve the high standard in teaching foreign
languages. The new multimedia class for foreign languages teaching is available for the
students of the Faculty
Within the humanities the Department concentrates its attention especially on the
application of modern teaching methods which are oriented towards communication in the
process of creative thinking formation.
The Department also takes part in the grant project "Methodological Aspects in
Teaching Humanities and Foreign Languages at the Technically Oriented Faculties". The
aim of the project is to elaborate the methodology as well as textbooks for teaching
humanities and foreign languages.
